Embarking on an adventure to Uganda to see Gorillas was a decision that was taken under diverse circumstances. As an avid traveler (but first time as a solo traveler), I wanted to explore the diverse landscapes of a new country and immerse myself in the vibrant culture of this African gem. Little did I know that this journey would become an unforgettable chapter of my life.
Mabamba Park: A Quest for the Shoebill Bird
My adventure began at Mabamba Park. As an amateur birdwatcher, I couldn’t pass up on the opportunity of seeing the rare and captivating Shoebill Balaeniceps rex). Alongside Joseph, my guide, the adventure began immediately when we jumped into a boat in Lake Victoria to navigate to the swamps in search of this rather odd-looking bird. Finally, I spotted it!. Witnessing this majestic and for me prehistoric looking creature in its natural habitat was a breathtaking experience.
The Road Less Traveled: From Entebbe to Kibale
Choosing to see the country at a slower pace, I embarked on a scenic road trip from Entebbe to Kibale. With Joseph, we meandered through picturesque landscapes, passing quaint villages full of plantations and bikes, motorbikes and trucks full of these plantains along the way. The journey allowed me to immerse myself in the local culture, witnessing the daily lives of Ugandan people and the vibrant markets full of fruits and vegetables that lined the roadside. The roadsides were full or drying coffee beans and cassava roots. It was an incredible opportunity to connect with the authentic spirit of the country.
Kibale National Park: A Primate Paradise
Waking up at Crater Safari lodge was an incredible and peaceful view and it set the tone for the adventure ahead. Arriving at Kibale National Park, I was greeted by a symphony of sounds echoing through the dense forest. This protected haven is home to an astonishing variety of animals, including the fascinating chimpanzees.
Accompanied by expert guides, we ventured into the heart of the jungle, waiting for a face-to-face encounter with these intelligent creatures. First was the noise and the emotion heightened as we approached! We initially spotted the chimps sitting, and followed them as they carried on with their daily adventures.
During my stay in Kibale, I had the chance to experience a unique community visit recommended by Joseph. This visit offered an authentic glimpse into Uganda’s rich cultural heritage. Our destination was Bigodi. It is a quaint village where I had the opportunity to witness the traditional practice of roasting coffee beans. The captivating aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans filled the air. Melissa and her daughter expertly roasted the beans over an open flame. They generously shared their techniques and knowledge with me, allowing me to savor the flavors of freshly brewed Ugandan coffee, an exquisite treat for the senses.
Our community exploration didn’t stop there. We continued on to a traditional distillery, where local residents craft banana gin—a beverage deeply intertwined with Ugandan traditions. I was enthralled by the intricate process of turning bananas into a flavorful and potent drink, and I had the pleasure of tasting this distinctive beverage firsthand.
The Creative Community
Next was a visit to the lady-weavers of baskets, the way they make them and how they naturally dye them, their work of art was amazing. I had the opportunity to “weave” with an wise old lady of the community and apparently I passed the test as they told me I could now work with them weaving baskets to sell!
As if these experiences weren’t already captivating enough, our community visit took an intriguing turn as we visited a local healer. This wise old man, held a special place in the community, using ancient techniques and natural remedies to address various ailments. Maria (my village guide), acted as our interpreter, facilitating a fascinating conversation with the healer, who shared insights into the traditional healing practices and the interconnectedness between the physical and spiritual realms. It was a humbling encounter that shed light on the profound wisdom passed down through generations.
The highlight of my journey however, awaited me in the mystical realm of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where I was about to fulfill a lifelong dream—encountering the majestic Mountain Gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei).
Finding the Gorillas
Early morning, we paused at the park entrance for instructions on our conduct during the encounter. Accompanied by park rangers and a guide, I embarked on a trek into the heart of the dense jungle, navigating steep terrain and lush, slippery foliage. The anticipation grew with each step, until suddenly our guide told us, put the masks on, we knew then we had found them!
Words cannot adequately capture the emotions that flooded my head. Our welcome was a baby gorilla jumping and bouncing all around us. After this cheeky little one, when then noticed the silverback male. At that moment I really didn’t know what to do, take pictures, watch them? I put the camera down and took a moment to take it all in. Just looking at how similar their gestures are to our humans ones was a surreal moment—one that reaffirmed the undeniable connection we share with our fellow creatures on this planet.
My magical trip to Uganda to see the Gorillas and as a solo female traveler surpassed all expectations.

From the incredible encounter with the rare shoebill bird at Mabamba Park to the enchanting interactions with chimpanzees in Kibale National Park, every moment was filled with wonder and amazement. The pinnacle of my adventure was undoubtedly the surreal experience of meeting the gentle giants. The mountain gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest will be in my heart forever.
Moreover, my community visit in Kibale provided a unique window into the local traditions. These experiences enriched my understanding of Uganda’s rich cultural heritage. I have fostered connections with the very welcoming and resilient people who call this country home.
